No more ‘Hand of Gaz’ goals this season
Following his controversial stoppage time equaliser against Colchester United on Saturday, Gareth Ainsworth has vowed to play the rest of the season with his hands tied behind his back.
The Chairboys looked to be heading for defeat on Saturday until Ainsworth threw himself at the ball and accidentally punched it into the net to earn Wycombe a precious point and leave their old rivals fuming.
It’s since been reported in the national press that a sweet old lady from Sussex would have supplemented her meagre pension with a £7,750 bookies’ windfall if Colchester had held on to win, and in the face of this bad publicity Ainsworth has vowed to prove a point.
“I’ve taken a lot of stick for the goal on Saturday and I’m going to do something about it,” said the Blues’ veteran.
“When I dived for the ball, I really honestly meant to head it and the way my hand just kind of whacked it must have been caused by my momentum.”
“I don’t need my hands to score goals and to prove it I’m going to play with them tied behind my back for the rest of the season.”
“I’ll keep them untied before the game so I can rally the Wycombe supporters, but I’ve borrowed some fluffy handcuffs from one of the club Directors and just before the game kicks-off I’ll get someone to put them on,” he said.
“I’m good enough to score against the likes of Colchester United with my hands tied behind my back and I’ll prove it.”
