Wycombe Wanderers 3 Bristol Rovers 1

Hat-trick hero Stuart Beavon made all the difference as Wycombe edged past the Pirates to book a home tie with Cheltenham in the next round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

The little striker scored his first after only 8 minutes when he punished some lax defending with a clinical finish from the edge of the Rovers’ box.

Another first-half highlight was an excellent 30 yard drive from Matt Bloomfield which forced a fine save from Pirates’ keeper Scott Bevan.

After 56 minutes, Nikki Bull made a super save to thwart a spectacular effort from the evergreen Scott McGleish, and moments later Wycombe were two-up when Kevin Betsy found Beavon who grabbed his second goal of the match with a fierce drive from 20 yards.

Rovers immediately made it 2-1 when Matt Harrold took full advantage of some awful hesitation in the Blues’ defence and calmly slotted the ball beyond Bull.

It was Beavon’s night though, and his hat-trick arrived after 75 minutes when he jinked around the edge of the box before firing another low shot into the back of the Rovers net.

It was a good night for the Blues and a great night for Beavon who left the field to a standing ovation.
