Central-defender Alan Bennett has today joined Wycombe Wanderers on a one-year deal after his contract with Brentford was terminated by mutual consent.
In two short loan spells at Adams Park last season, Bennett made six appearances in total, scoring one goal and helping the Chairboys keep clean sheets against Millwall, Southampton, Carlisle and Gillingham.
Born in Cork, Bennett made 141 appearances for his local side Cork City before joining Reading in 2007.
Unable to force his way into the Royals’ first team, the defender was loaned to Southampton for six months during which time he made 10 appearances for the Saints.
Bennett then joined Brentford on loan and was an integral part of the Bees’ side that won the League Two Championship in 2009, taking over as captain and lifting the trophy in the absence of regular skipper Kevin O’Connor.
Last Summer, Bennett joined Brentford on a permanent basis and was appointed club captain.
The 28 year-old has also made two appearances for the Republic of Ireland, earning his caps against Ecuador and Bolivia in 2007.
Bennett’s signing brings the number of central-defenders in Wycombe’s first-team squad to four, the others being Leon Johnson, Dave Winfield and Chris Westwood.
