Wycombe Wanderers today announced that Jason McCarthy has left the club with mutual consent.

The Right-Back has spent 4 separate spells with Wycombe, joining on loan from Southampton in the 15-16 season, before joining permanently in 2018.

He was then sold to Millwall in the summer of 2019, but rejoined the club in the middle of an unlikely promotion push and made 9 appearances before COVID hit. He join the club fully again for the Chairboys maiden Championship season, where he helped push the team into a close fought battle against relegation.

The Right-Back was a stalwart and fan favourite under Gareth Ainsworth, making 182 league appearances under Ainsworth across his spells. However, he has found game time harder to find under Matt Bloomfield, being supplanted by understudy Jack Grimmer and more recently development team graduate Jasper Pattenden in the starting lineup, making just 10 league appearances in the 23-24 season due to consecutive injuries, and just 2 league appearances so far this season. The mutual termination of his contract will allow the 29 year old to seek new challenges elsewhere in the football leagues, while freeing up wage budget for the Chairboys as they enter the winter window.

Voted Supporters Player of the Season in the 15/16 and 18/19 seasons, McCarthy was loved for his work ethic and stamina, willing to run through brick walls to help his team. We wish him the best of luck at his next club.
