The Chairboys’ destiny remains in their own hands following the penultimate round of results.

Wycombe, Shrewsbury and Accrington all won.

Chesterfield and Torquay both drew.

Bury, Stevenage and Gillingham all lost.

The top eight are now fighting three separate battles with only Accrington able to relax next Saturday.

Stanley will finish 5th whatever happens and are the only side with a confirmed place in the play-offs. It’s a great achievement for a club with an average gate of only 1,867, and with momentum on their side, you wouldn’t bet against them making it to Old Trafford in a few weeks time.

The title is between Chesterfield and Bury with the Spireites only needing a point at home against Gillingham to clinch top spot.

The final automatic promotion place will go to either Wycombe or Shrewsbury. The Chairboys have a one point advantage but an inferior goal-difference and must at least match the Shrews’ result on Saturday to retain third-spot.

Torquay, Stevenage and Gillingham are fighting for the bottom two play-off places. The Devon side are in pole position, and with their rivals facing Chesterfield and Bury on Saturday, it would take a couple of surprise results to prevent the Gulls from extending their season.
