Wycombe have announced that Mike Dodds, who was most recently head coach of Sunderland on an interim basis, has been named the new head coach of the Wanderers.

The question of who would be Matt Bloomfield’s successor was asked immediately after the departure of ‘Mr Wycombe’ to Championship club, Luton Town, with Sam Grace and his team taking charge of the blues on a caretaker basis, winning two and drawing two of his four games.

Dodds was a relatively unknown name compared to the likes of Steven Schumacher and Des Buckingham, who were also linked to the vacant role in Buckinghamshire.

Starting his career at Coventry City at the age of 18 as a youth coach, he acquired his UEFA B License while still at college. Joining Birmingham’s academy in 2009 on a coaching basis, making the step up to academy manager 11 years later, credited with having a positive impact on Birmingham academy graduates Nathan Redmond, Demarai Gray and Jude Bellingham.

In August of 2021, Dodds left Birmingham to join Sunderland as head of individual player development before being named as interim manager following the sacking of Lee Johnson, and again following the sacking of Tony Mowbray, once again appointed as interim manager until the end of the season following the sacking of Michael Beale. Managing a total of 18 games for Sunderland, he won 4, drew 3 and lost 11.

While there are big boots to fill after both Matt Bloomfield and Gareth Ainsworth had been a part of the club since 2003, it is important that the fans get behind the head coach and push on with their efforts for automatic promotion.
