News broken by Pete O’Rourke from Football Insider has reported that Scott Mitchell has departed from Wycombe Wanderers. And this news appears to be more conclusive by the removal of Mitchell’s name from the Wycombe’s staff directory on the club’s official website. With no announcement made by the club at this stage, speculation will be rife around the real reasons for his departure. According to the Fooball Insider article, Mitchell was informed earlier last week of the club’s change of direction.
Mitchell, 39, took the role in the summer of 2023 as part of Matt Bloomfield’s overhaul from the Gareth Ainsworth period. He’s been largely credited for his vast and in depth knowledge of up and coming talent which has assisted Wycombe progress on the field.
Earlier in the week, acting Chairman Dan Rice appeared with Academy Director Jeremy Sauer for the YouTube channel Project Footballer where they shared their intention for Wycombe to be ‘a leading academy in the UK’. Not only this, but they alluded to the change of philosophy with the academy providing a hub of developing players for the first team.
And with the club also hosting talent trials for the forthcoming Under 18’s academy team at the Harlington training ground last week, it appears the swift change to this new approach is gaining momentum. These were intentions outlined by Chairboys owner Mikheil Lomtadze when he completed his take over from Rob Couhig earlier this year. Mitchell’s sudden availability is expected to alert a number of clubs.
