In the wake of yesterday’s 1-0 win over Gillingham, here are some views on the game from the Gills’ manager Andy Hessenthaler and a few of their fans.
“They’re a good side and the only disappointing thing for us is that we do work very hard on the set plays – for and against – and that’s what’s ended up costing us the three points,” Hessenthaler told BBC Radio Kent.
“From the corner the fellow’s got in front and headed it and it’s gone against the bar and dropped to the lad and he’s put it away – and then we have a chance down the other end and we hit the bar and unfortunately it doesn’t drop to us it drops to their defender and he clears it, so we’re disappointed we’ve conceded from a set play.”
“I thought we looked a little bit tired today I’ve got to say. I think we’ve had to dig really deep to turn things around, and maybe it’s one game too many for us.”
“We’ve got to keep our heads up – they’re a very good side, for me they’ll be one of the sides that will go up this year – they’ll be in that top three – they’re certainly Gillingham’s bogey side as well, they’ve got some good players, they’ve got a good manager and it was a hard fought game but we didn’t get the result.”
The Gills fans were sorry to see their winning streak come to an end, but most of them felt it was a fair result.
The following extracts are taken from Gillingham Fans Online, BBC606,
‘In the end we lost marginally to probably what is generally agreed to be the best football team in the division. We played well, and putting in performances like that for the next few matches will get us right in the mix.’
‘We just weren’t at the races today unfortunately, apart from the first 10 and the last 20 minutes chasing the game. Having said that, I don’t think Wycombe were much better, we just gave them free headers at three consecutive corners and it cost us.’
‘As much as it pains me to say it, I think 1-0 Wycombe was probably the right result on the balance of play. It was a shame we didn’t snatch a point when Cody Mc`s chip hit the bar late on though. At times today, I thought we gave Wycombe far to much time of the ball especially first half and they had the midfield battle won far too easily. Stuart Lewis put in a great shift for them in the centre. Shame he felt the need to go down under any form of challenge.’
‘In my opinion, Wycombe looked a better footballing side, and the big difference was that they always had options in possession, while we seemed to be living off scraps. Having said that, while they caused a few scares they didn’t create many clear chances.’
‘Today we were lacklustre and toothless and what made things worse was that Wycombe were ordinary at best and were there for the taking.’
‘I don’t think we deserved anything from the game; especially when we defend like we did for their goal.’
‘Must admit, I thought we would lose by more. Didn’t think much of the referee either.’
