The Opposition View – Oxford

In the wake of yesterday’s goalless draw with Oxford United, here are some views on the game from the U’s manager Chris Wilder and a few of their fans.


The Oxford boss couldn’t quite believe that his side didn’t manage to convert one of their many opportunities.

“I don’t know for the life of me how we’re not the leading goalscorers in this league with the amount of chances we created and the way we played,” he said.

Despite the fact that his side are still looking for their first win since returning to the Football League, Wilder was pleased with their performance and felt that taking a point at Wycombe was not to be underestimated.

“We’ve had three tough games but possibly our points tally hasn’t matched our performances. We had to play well against a team I think will definitely be in the top three come the end of the season,” he said.

“We stayed in the game in the first half and then we needed to up our standards in the second half – and I think we did that. We’re happy with a point here because they are good side but I think we’ve shown that we’re not bad ourselves.”


The Oxford fans were fair in their assessment of the game. They accepted that Wycombe shaded the first-half, but were disappointed that the U’s didn’t take full advantage of their improved performance after the break.

‘Good game, not a drab 0-0 at all. Chances for both sides but the finishing touch wasn’t there. Nikki Bull and the crossbar kept Wycombe in it in the second-half – wasteful finishing from Wycombe kept us in it in the first half. Three games in, I think we’ve adjusted to the higher league. We’ve just got to start putting some of our chances away because it’s the only thing missing from our game.’

‘The save from Bull where he got his fingertips to Beano’s venomous strike from the edge of the area was breathtaking. A top drawer save. Wycombe were outmuscled and struggled with our physicality for long spells. If we continue to play like this the goals will come and we will be fine.’

‘I think we bridged the gap in quality today. A very strong performance which augers well. A winning goal would have put the gloss on a terrific away performance. I thought we looked very strong, powerful and fit and did more than enough to win the game. If anything it was Wycombe who maybe got found out a bit. In a derby game, Oxford seemed to want it more.’
