The Opposition View – Sheffield Wednesday

In the wake of yesterday’s 2-1 home defeat to Sheffield Wednesday, here are some views on the game from the Owls’ manager Gary Megson and a few of their fans.

Speaking to Wednesday Player, Megson gave his assessment of the game as follows…..

“I thought it was terrific, we should have been a minimum of one up within the first five minutes. Great start, forced a couple of corners, really on the front foot.”

“We scored a good goal, and I know he’s only a young lad and it was a good strike from his point of view but we shouldn’t be letting their goal in.”

“At least we’ve got the wherewithal to get back and get ourselves a lead, and then we’ve hit the bar, had what looked a decent goal chalked off for offside, and then we’ve had chance after chance after chance and not put them away, so it made it a touch tenuous towards the end.”

The Wednesday fans had both harsh words and praise for Wycombe as they became the latest lot to return home with nothing but fond memories of their visit to Adams Park.

‘It was a walk in the park. Felt like a cup game at times it was so one sided.’

‘More than happy with that. Dominated throughout, only remember Bywater making one save.’

‘We should have scored at least five. Why Wycombe kept pumping high balls up to their small strikers was beyond me. I think they had about two shots at goal in total. Their 15 year old went past three defenders and beat Bywater at his near post so it was a poor goal for us to give away.’

‘I came away from today’s match wondering why it was only 2-1. There was only one team on the pitch, and if you take away Ibe and one or two others, Wycombe were clueless.’

‘Pretty routine, We will definitely play better opposition, and will play worse and score more. I think 2-1 flattered Wycombe who could have easily been 3-1 down at half time and perhaps if we had taken our chances 4 or 5-1 at full time.’

‘The thing that pleased me most about yesterday’s performance was the way we kept possession and moved the ball around. Our off the ball movement was very good, as was the way we kept our shape. The only surprise was, that we didn’t score more goals.’

‘I have mixed opinions. Delighted we won, but disappointed we didn’t win by considerably more. I thought Wycombe were poor.’

They said some nice things too…….

‘Jordan Ibe impressed me. The last time an opposition player impressed me as much was when Adam Johnson ran the show at Hillsborough. Everything Wycombe did today involved him….cheeky bid before the premiership vultures go in for him?’

‘He was very good, excellent goal. Him and Kadeem Harris were their main danger men.’

‘Totally unnecessary to book the boy after celebrating his first league goal with his mum and family. Had the strength to muscle though and unleash a great shot. Another instance of referees killing the game we love.’

‘For a kid of fifteen he was very confident and wanted to run at our defense every time he had the ball. He took his goal well and the ref was a tosser for booking him! I reckon he’s gonna be moving to a new team quite soon!’

‘I’m looking forward to us bringing through some players like this in the future. Imagine how their fans must feel (except for losing), when they see a 15 year old looking like that. Must be well exciting.’

‘I thought Wycombe played the ball around quite nicely at times and certainly looked a better team than their league position would suggest.’

‘The stewarding at WWFC never dipped from being polite and helpful, and they genuinely did seem to want to let you just get on with enjoying the day. As one of the biggest critics of stewarding at sporting events in this country, and their general OTT approach to supporters in the name of health & safety, it really was a refreshing change to be treated as humans, by humans, well done Wycombe.’
