Wycombe began their 2025 with a victory over Exeter City today, a notorious ‘bogey’ team for the Wanderers, having not won against the Devon side since 2017.

With Wanderers looking for a reaction after their loss against Charlton last Sunday, which happened to be their first loss in the League since August.

The first half was fairly quiet, with Wanderers having a few chances within the first 20 minutes played, but they were quickly taken away by Exeter.

There weren’t many chances in the first 45 overall, one coming from Wycombe in which Grimmer crosses into the box, with Kone getting onto the end of it but couldn’t get enough power behind the ball with his header, unable to beat the keeper.

Going into the second half, Wycombe hoped to build on their first half performance with some goals, and that’s exactly what they did, winning a free kick on the edge of the box after Caleb Taylor was fouled, Luke Leahy immediately stepping up and taking, the ball deflecting but ending up in the back of the net, Wycombe in front with a little less than 70 minutes played.

The second half was proving to be a lot stronger and arguably more interesting.

Wycombe made a change shortly after, the goal scorer, Luke Leahy, making way for Josh Scowen.

The blues got very close to extending their lead over The Grecians, a Lubala shot going just wide.

However, it seemed Exeter would continue to be Wycombe’s bogey team as they levelled the score line after a corner was headed home by Crama, with only four minutes of normal time left to play.

More changes were made after the equaliser, Kodua and McCleary coming on for Lubala and Onyedinma.

All eyes were on the fourth official as fans waited to see how much added time was going to be added, five minutes being the answer.

In the second minute of additional time, Wanderers were awarded a penalty following a handball from Exeter, the Grecians boss being dismissed due to his reaction which saw him on the pitch in order to try and argue with the official.

The ball was handed to Aaron Morley, who converted.
It proved to be a bittersweet moment for the Bolton loanee, with the announcement coming after the match that his parent club had triggered his recall clause, his last Wycombe appearance ending in scoring the winner in stoppage time.
