Wycombe shellshocked Stockport County with an incredible performance that saw them win 5-0 at Edgeley Park. And that performance puts the Chairboys top of the league. After a scrappy few minutes to the game where neither side could get any control, it took a counter attack to break the deadlock. After a Stockport free kick was cleared by Caleb Taylor, and a miscued clearance that hit a chasing Cameron Humphreys, the ball was released into the path of Dan Udoh who ran into the penalty box. He was however brought down by Stockport’s Fraser Horsfall which gave referee Matthew Corlett the easy decision in awarding the Chairboys a penalty. Richard Kone picked up the ball and placed his effort past Stockport’s goalkeeper Corey Addai to give Wycombe the lead. And it only took Wycombe a further minute to wait for a second goal. Immediately from the restart, Wycombe found the ball down the right hand side after Fred Onyedinma intercepted a loose ball and he ran at a peddling Stockport backline. With a lack of pressure, Onyedinma shaped the ball into the box before placing a shot past Addai to put Wycombe further ahead.

With Stockport shell shocked, Wycombe sensed more goals and three minutes later Aaron Morley almost got in on the act. Stockport struggled to clear their lines which found a loose ball into the direction of Morley, who shot on goal but had his effort deflected for a corner. But minutes later, Wycombe made it three when Richard Kone got his second of the game. Stockport this time struggled down the left hand side and the ever chasing Cameron Humphreys intercepted the ball and ran down the wing before crossing the ball into the box. Stockport’s Addai could only parry the cross into the path of Kone who had the simple task of tapping home. Wycombe immediately then controlled the game’s momentum by frustrating Stockport from having too much momentum. Whilst there was a combination of direct balls into the area via a combination of corners and possession, the Wycombe backline held on firm. And Richard Kone arguably could have had a hat-trick before half time when he controlled the ball from a Franco Ravizzoli clearance around the half way line. He combined superbly with Onyedinma before a quick intricate move between Onyedinma and Humphreys released the chasing Kone into the box. But with only placement required, Kone appeared to over think his decision and saw his final connection tamely go past Addai and hooked away for a corner.

In the second half, Stockport’s manager Dave Challinor immediately rang the changes by introducing three substitutions to make an impact on the game. But Wycombe really never felt troubled and it was the Chairboys that continued where they left off in the first half. Morley once again threatened to get in on the act in the 61st minute when Fred Onyedinma worked an opportunity on the right wing before feeding Morley for a shot on goal. However Morley saw his shot go wide of the Stockport goal. Josh Scowen then got involved. He combined with Onyedinma to provide Richard Kone another opportunity to seal a hat-trick. Unfortunately the Ivorian again got a weak connection. But the fourth goal wasn’t far behind. A well worked move by Kone down the left gained the Chairboys a corner and the well worked routine between Morley and Dan Harvie found Cameron Humphreys. Humphreys delivered a cross towards the back post for a lurking Fred Onyedinma to head home. Wycombe were in dreamland. And with that goal, the Stockport fans immediately exited Edgeley Park.

With Stockport deflated, Wycombe continued to apply the pressure and Addai having to be alert as he denied Kone another chance at completing a hat-trick. This time Scowen combined with Harvie down the left hand side before Harvie got himself to the byline and crossed into the path of Kone who saw his effort superbly denied by Addai. And it only took two minutes for Wycombe to get a fifth goal! Again a well worked move from a Harvie throw in, worked into the box by Fred Onyedinma and Richard Kone before setting up Aaron Morley, who superbly controlled the ball into the bottom of Addai’s goal. The scene’s of jubilation was evident across the Wanderers team and bench as they watched the game practically sealed. Matt Bloomfield rang out the changes in the last ten minutes to provide some much needed rest bite to the team. And even then, Wycombe continued to threaten with substitutes Luke Leahy threading a ball into the path of the chasing Bez Lubala. But Lubala could only get his shot into the arms of Addai. As the whistle was blown for full time, Edgeley Park was only met by the rowdy sounds of the Wycombe fans who must have been rubbing their eyes at the performance. The result places the Chairboys top of the table by virtue of playing a game more than Birmingham City. The Blues will now visit to Wigan Athletic on Saturday to extend the momentum.
