Wycombe extend the unbeaten run at Burton

|

Wycombe continued their unbeaten run to nine league games in an action packed game at the Pirelli Stadium winning 3-2 against Burton Albion. But the Chairboys were made to work hard for the three points as Burton proved stubborn and resilient during the course of the game. The Brewers started the brighter of the two sides by dominating the possession in the early exchanges. But they lacked intent with the ball which played into the hands of the Chairboys. Mason Bennett however warned the Blues of his threat by having the best chance for Burton. He received the ball after some build up play down the right hand side saw a cross field ball reach him in the middle of the Wycombe half. Luckily for the Wycombe defence, he blasted an effort wayward. Wycombe once again got themselves adapted to the pace and then took the lead. In the sixteenth minute after some great control by Josh Scowen, he fed a sideward pass to the path of Gideon Kodua. And Kodua duly obliged by firing the Chairboys into the lead. Wycombe looked to control the tempo of the game with Burton threatening on a few ocassions.

But almost against the run of play, Burton pegged Wycombe with an equaliser. And it was a good move by the Brewers as right back Terrence Vancooten combined with Nick Akoto down Wycombe’s left. Vancooten’s subsequent cross was headed across goal by Mason Bennett and striker Daniel Orsi tapped home the equaliser. Wycombe picked themselves up and attempted to get a second before half time. Gideon Kodua’s pace proved a concern for Burton but were unable to create a clear cut chance.

In the second half, Wycombe approached the half smarter and immediately applied more pressure on Burton. This had the desired impact as they took the lead. Bez Lubala received the ball after good build up play in the Burton half. He aimed on goal and hit the post which rebounded into the path of Luke Leahy, who had the easy task for tapping home Wycombe ahead again. And Wycombe didn’t stop there. Aaron Morley intercepted the ball in the Burton half and threaded the ball to Lubala. Lubala got himself into the box before pulling it back into the path of Richard Kone who looked like putting the Chairboys further ahead. However Burton’s Alex Bannon threw himself at the ball to block his effort for a corner. And the ever resilient Burton got themselves back into the game with spectacular fashion. A quick passing move found Charlie Webster, who from 25 yards out and dispatched home a superb shot past Franco Ravizzoli to bring the Brewers level once more.

Both sides then made changes as both sides chased a winner. Matt Bloomfield took off Bez Lubala and Gideon Kodua for Fred Onyedinema and Garath McCleary and this immediately injected some energy as they looked to stretch the Burton defence. And with Dan Udoh coming on for Richard Kone with fifteen minutes to go, the persistent pressure eventually took it’s toll on Burton’s backline. Another good build up move between McCleary and Scowen saw the latter release Fred Onyedinema in the Burton box. His cross then found substitute Dan Udoh to tap home Wycombe’s winning third goal. With the game entering the last eight minutes, Bloomfield shored up the resistance by replacing Luke Leahy for Matt Butcher. And Wycombe saw out the game as with five minutes of added time, Burton applied some late pressure with a persistent onslaught of quick corners. It was a well deserved three points for Matt Bloomfield and his side on the road and the Blues will now be looking to extend the unbeaten run on Saturday against Leyton Orient.
