Wycombe Game Abandoned

Wycombe’s home game this evening against Macclesfield Town was abandoned after 22 minutes, when the referee deemed the conditions unplayable.

The only change manager Peter Taylor made to the Wycombe side, was bringing back Tommy Doherty in place of John Mousinho.

The Blues lined up in a 4-3-3 formation as follows:

Shearer

Hunt Williamson McCracken Woodman

Holt Doherty Moussa

Church Harrold Zebroski

Subs: Young Johnson Mousinho Phillips Vieira

With snow steadily falling, the ground staff worked to clear the pitch-markings shortly before kick-off.

When the game started, it was clearly difficult for the players to play their normal game. Passes along the ground had to be hit with a bit of extra venom, otherwise they were held up in the snow before reaching their intended target.

It all made for a fairly exciting spectacle and the fans were disappointed when the game was finally called off.

It was however, probably the correct decision. The pitch-markings were disappearing again by the second, visibility wasn’t great for the players and the snow showed no signs of easing off.

Thirty years ago they would have kept playing, but things are different now.

Wycombe were well on top during the 22 minutes and most of the time the ball was in the Macclesfield half.

There were four key moments during play.

After 3 minutes Lewis Hunt played a back-pass to Scott Shearer that was never going to get there along the snowy ground. It was intercepted, but fortunately Shearer was alert to the situation and charged out of his area to clear the ball with a sliding tackle on the oncoming Macclesfield forward.

In the 7th minute Franck Moussa let fly with a superb 25 yard drive and was only denied his first Wycombe goal by a great save from Macclesfield keeper John Brain, who launched himself and tipped it over the bar.

After 16 minutes Lewis Hunt put a firm, low cross into the crowded area and Matt Harrold was first to the ball. In one movement Harrold turned and shot low and hard to the keeper’s left. Brain made another super save, diving quickly and turning the ball past the post.

Immediately afterwards in the 17th minute, Moussa had another long range effort. This one was deflected for a corner by one of the many Macclesfield bodies which were by this time packing their defence.

Then it was all over, the ref had seen enough.

The good news is Wycombe remain top of the table.

The only two teams who could have overtaken Wycombe at the top this evening were Brentford and Exeter. Both lost, Brentford 3-0 at Chester and Exeter 6-1 at home to Chesterfield.

However, Bradford and Darlington have closed the gap. Both recorded victories and they now sit in 2nd and 3rd place behind The Chairboys.

Satisfying moment of the night
It was reassuring to see The Doc back alongside Holt, weaving passing patterns between them in the snow.

Next up, Rotherham away on Saturday.
