Wycombe continued their unbeaten run at The Brick Community Stadium today, mostly holding on to a 1-0 lead throughout the 90 minutes played.
The game began with Scowen leading out the squad with Club Captain, Jack Grimmer on the bench, presumably due to being without full match fitness due to an injury he picked up against Leyton Orient, which saw him come off in that game.
Wycombe were quick to take the lead in the 12th minute of the first half, with Dan Harvie crossing a corner into the box which was won by Joe Low, who glanced the ball into the back of the net, making it one nil to the Wanderers, much to the delight of the fans who made the trip up north to Wigan.
Wigan seemed comfortable on the ball, keeping the ball in their own half most of the time, with Wanderers pressing as much as they could, but tiredness seemed to set in due to the same team being played on Tuesday night against Stockport County, two long away days after the other. However, Wycombe had another chance in which Udoh’s powerful drive came to nothing as Wycombe continued to try and continue their goal-scoring.
After 45 minutes played, Joe Low’s opener was the only thing that separated the two teams.
Ex-Wycombe loanee, Dale Taylor came on for the Lactics at half-time, and it didn’t take too long for him to get into the game, sliding in and firing the ball over free net, a nervous start for Wycombe, who made two changes after, Josh Scowen, who had been cautioned in the first half, came off for Luke Leahy, and Lubala came on for Bez Lubala, Wycombe continuing their lead after an hour played.
The changes seemed to allow Wycombe to go into the next gear, with some promising moves, resulting in two shots blocked from Leahy and Humphries respectively.
Wigan took control after this, with Franco Ravizolli proving his ability in net, stopping an equaliser from Thomas, the home side finally beginning to get into the game.
Brandon Hanlan came on after this, making his first League appearance in a year after his knee injury, this also being his 100th appearance in a Wycombe Wanderers shirt.
Wigan continued to be on the front foot, with the only thing stopping them from making the score equal was yet another brilliant denial from Franco following a header from Aasgaard from one yard off the goal line.
Franco’s heroics continued as he stopped yet another shot from Aasgaard, allowing Wycombe continue to cling onto their lead with 85 minutes played.
Jack Grimmer came on for Cameron Humphries, with five minutes left of normal time left to be played.
The perfect comeback for Hanlan was unfortunately denied as he was through on goal off a ball from Leahy, but Sam Tickle was quick off his line to deny Wanderers doubling their lead in stoppage time. The fourth official raising his board to reveal there was seven minutes left to be played.
The home side were on the front foot for most of the time, with the addition of Grimmer allowing to Wycombe to change to a back five and defend their lead with everything they had left to give.
The full-time whistle was blown, Wycombe continuing their unbeaten League run, two points ahead of Birmingham going into the International break.
