Wycombe Wanderers will have to show a marked improvement in their form if they are to remain in the automatic promotion places when the season’s all done and dusted.

They may have been the team to beat in the first half of the campaign, having averaged exactly 2 points per game up until game 23, but since then, what some hoped was merely a blip has turned into something more worrying.

A quick look at the form each team has shown since the turn of the season shows that Wycombe currently lie in 14th place in terms of average points gained per game.

Average Points Gained Per Game Since Mid Season (Game 23)

1 – Brentford……..2.08
2 – Gillingham……2.00
3 – Chesterfield….1.89
4 – Rotherham…..1.89
5 – Bury…………..1.85
6 – Rochdale……..1.77
7 – Morecambe….1.77
8 – Exeter…………1.69
9 – Bournemouth..1.62
10 – Lincoln………,1.55
11 – Bradford…….1.46
12 – Darlington…..1.45
13 – Shrewsbury…1.43
14 – Wycombe……1.33
15 – Barnet………..1.17
16 – Luton…………1.17
17 – Notts County.1.15
18 – Grimsby……..1.00
19 – Dagenham….1.00
20 – Accrington…..0.92
21 – Macclesfield…0.92
22 – Port Vale…….0.82
23 – Aldershot…….0.55
24 – Chester………0.29

If each team were to continue averaging the above points per game until the end of the season, the final table would show Brentford, Gillingham and Rochdale in the automatic promotion places, with Wycombe finishing 5th.

Projected Final Top Ten

1 – Brentford……89.8
2 – Gillingham…..80.0
3 – Rochdale…….78.7
4 – Bury………….78.5
5 – Wycombe……76.7
6 – Exeter………..74,9
7 – Bradford……..72.6
8 – Chesterfield…71.4
9 – Shrewsbury…69.9
10 – Morecambe..65.7

It won’t look like that of course, as some teams will find form and some will lose it. But from Wycombe’s point of view it makes uncomfortable reading and reinforces the fact that results need to improve soon, or another play-off lottery is fast approaching.
