Wycombe Sign Lee Sawyer On-Loan From Chelsea

Wycombe Wanderers have captured the signature of midfielder Lee Sawyer on loan from Chelsea until the end of the season.


Sawyer is known as a combative attacking midfielder and has represented England at U-16, U18 and U-19 level. He is in his 10th year at Stamford Bridge having joined the club when he was 9 yrs old.

The youngster made seven appearances for Chelsea’s reserve side last season as well as being a prominent member of their youth team which reached the final of the FA Youth Cup.

He has twice been named on the bench for the Chelsea first team, against Everton in the Premier League and in the Champions League against Rosenberg.


Earlier this season, Sawyer was on loan at Southend United where he scored 3 goals in 12 starts, before having a brief spell at Coventry City where he started only once.

In September, playing alongside former Wycombe favourites Kevin Betsy and Anthony Grant, Sawyer scored both Southend goals in their 4-2 defeat to Leyton Orient in the Football League trophy and later the same month he scored another against the O’s, this time in the league.


The Chairboys have lacked a midfield goalscorer all season and after suffering a further blow earlier this week when playmaker-in-chief Tommy Doherty received a four match suspension following his second red card of the campaign, manager Peter Taylor has acted to bring in Sawyer.

Taylor told his club’s official website: ‘I’m absolutely delighted to have got him. He is a tremendous midfield player who I know did superbly well at Southend United earlier in the season. They were desperate to keep hold of him but were unable to due to the 93 day rule.’


Sawyer is likely to go straight into the team for Saturday’s game against promotion rivals Rochdale, where he will join exciting striker John Akinde in making his Adams Park debut for the Chairboys.
