Wycombe: The Opposition View

Following yesterday’s draw between Wycombe Wanderers and Gillingham at Priestfield, here are some views from Gills’ manager Mark Stimson and a few of their fans.

Stimson told his club’s official website: ‘I thought we were very good against a side at the top of the league that has won a lot of games this year. For us to produce a performance like that, after an awful performance on Boxing day was very pleasing.’

He went on to say: ‘When you play that well, you have got to get points. It’s not often in games, especially against a team at the top of the league, that you play that well and don’t get anything. I am particularly pleased for the players and especially pleased for (goalscorer) Curtis Weston.”

The Gillingham boss told Kent Online: ‘The goal against us was comical. It was one of those which you don’t often see in a season.’

The Gills fans were about as impressed with Wycombe’s performance as I was with their facilities for visiting supporters.

The following extracts are taken from ‘Gillingham Fans Online’ and Vital Gillingham.

‘ I didn’t think ‘top of the league’ Wycombe looked any better than us and I was somehow disappointed a Peter Taylor side didn’t pass us off the pitch and worse still, resorted to time wasting whilst leading.’

‘We did pretty much everything right today except convert the chances we had. Bad finishing or good defending by Wycombe? Either way, we outplayed the league leaders.’

‘Wycombe were well organised and played some very neat football, fading in the end due to their poor last ball and good reading by our defence. Quite a few goalmouth melees in their box, with some desperate defending. Wycombe played much as I expected from Peter Taylor sides, with mainly 10 men quick to get behind the ball.’

Wigs wrote:
‘Wycombe sat back the whole game yet their keeper didn’t have a save to make that I can remember. I hardly think our performance was the reason Wycombe looked so cack.’

‘Sums this league up. Top team have no shots on goal, are gifted a goal themselves and then spend most of the match trying to run the clock down. We really have been disappointing this season because this league is here to be won.’

‘This league is all about consistency. It seems if you put a few good results together then you’re going to be up there. For us to do well against a side who are top, shows we are also a good side and we just need to be a bit more consistent ourselves.’

‘Roycey didn’t have a proper save to make and if we hadn’t gifted them a goal they didn’t look like they would’ve bothered about scoring one with their 11 men behind the ball tactics. Wycombe looked nowhere near as good as Rochdale or Brentford and should be a lot more pleased with their point than we are.’

Overall I thought we played some decent football. We were really the only side that was trying to play, can’t remember Wycombe having a single shot on goal, but they got the kind of luck you get when you’re up that end of the table. To be fair though we hardly tested their keeper either, although a couple of scrambles in their area could’ve gone anywhere. I’d be interested to know whether Wycombe consider yesterday to have been an off-day for them – I can’t imagine they’d have opened up a 5 point gap at the top playing like that.’

‘Totally dominated the league leaders and gifted them their goal in a game where they had only a couple of shots. A well deserved equaliser, although after the performance, some will feel it was two points dropped.’

Never mind. We all have off days and we didn’t lose. Bring on the Shakers.
