Following yesterday’s goalless draw between Wycombe and Morecambe, here are some views on the game from Shrimps’ manager Sammy McIlroy and a few of their fans.

McIlroy told ‘the bay’ radio station that he thought it was a fantastic point against a ‘high flying’ Wycombe side.

‘It was a really hard game today but my boys gave me everything.’ said the Morecambe boss.

He felt his team played some ‘great stuff’ but qualified it by saying: ‘If I’m going to be a little bit critical, it’s maybe in the final third that we didn’t put enough pressure on the Wycombe goalkeeper.’

McIlroy felt that Wycombe had come to Christie Park as favourites but his team had ‘matched them all the way’, particularly in midfield.

‘Midfield was always going to be a key area and Drummond and Hunter stopped Holt and Doherty from playing and I thought we bossed the midfield area.’ said the Shrimps manager.

The Morecambe fans were quick to identify Wycombe’s strengths and weaknesses.

The following extracts are taken from ‘Shrimpsvoices’, BBC606 and The Football Forum.

‘Easy to see why they are up there in the league with that defence. Terrible in attack though.’

‘The lads played well but lacked a cutting edge up front. Can see why Wycombe have only had 20 goals against them in 30 odd games with 11 men behind the ball at every chance.’

‘Thought we played well today. Wycombe got exactly what they came for. It’s a good sign when a team at the top is happy to play out a draw against us.’

‘We were the better team but they were very hard to break down. Roche barely had a save to make, which speaks volumes about how good our defence was too’

‘What a good team performance. Ok, we didn’t test their keeper anywhere near enough (mainly down to their back four, who were brilliantly organised), but each player worked their proverbials off.’

Christies Child wrote:
‘We just lacked that extra bit of quality up front to unlock the best defence in the league. They are inept up front, which their radio team behind us in the stand freely acknowledged. It’s only their excellent defence that has got them where they are.’

‘Quite a dull game really with very few chances. Was very impressed by their captain McCracken who organised the back line really well and won everything in the air.’

‘We did lack that quality in the final third but so did Wycombe. You can see why they have conceded the least and scored the least. We weren’t quite good enough to break them down but they couldn’t break us down either.’

‘A good point against a good side near the top but we may have got three points if we had put our chances away.’

‘Enjoyable game, thought we looked the better side and played some good stuff.’

‘On the whole, a fair result. Wycombe as expected proved to be hard to break down, so a point each is about right.’

‘I Think Wycombe will be going home the happier side. Both teams lacked in the final third but both defences were outstanding. Did you see the Wycombe player go down near the end holding his face, the one with the black stubble? The ref told him to sort himself out and even his own player Holt started laughing at him.’

‘I think if this game had been played a couple of weeks ago, then their No 8 (Doherty) would have been nominated for Best Male Actor at the Oscars. He couldn’t have dived any better off a springboard than when he almost made contact with Wayne and yet he wasn’t even booked right under the ref’s nose.’
