Wycombe: The Opposition View

Following yesterday’s draw between Wycombe Wanderers and Shrewsbury Town, here are some views on the game from Shrews’ manager Paul Simpson and a few of their fans.



Simpson told his club’s official website: ‘We’re very disappointed that we haven’t won it, but it’s as good a ninety minute performance, especially away from home, that we’ve had all season.’

‘We’ve shown that we can play, shown that we can pass the ball, shown that we have good fitness as they were dead on their feet while we were still strong,’ said the Shrewsbury boss.

Simpson thought that Gary Holt’s goal was a ‘wonder strike,’ but felt his players should have closed the Wycombe midfielder down. ‘You’ve got to be prepared to take one for the team and get close enough to stop them from getting the shot in,’ said Simpson.

Feeling that Wycombe’s goal was against the run of play, Simpson said: ‘You can sense it when you don’t take the chances you have. When that happens, then you’re going to get punished at some point. I don’t really know what the stats will say, but they’ve not had many more chances other than the goal. I think their goalkeeper has been the busier of the two.’

Simpson felt his side’s equaliser was well worked and ‘typical of the football that we played for most of the afternoon.’




The Shrews’ fans felt they were the better side and were unimpressed with Wycombe’s performance.

‘A good, solid team performance, we dominated the first half and were rarely troubled in the second. We should have won the game. The only negative I have is that we aren’t quite clinical enough in front of goal. I thought our passing and movement, first half in particular was very good. We caused them a lot of problems. A quick mention to the stewards who greeted us and asked us how our journey was on entering the ground and then wished us a safe journey home. Its nice and refreshing to see stewards take a safe but slightly less strict approach. All in all, a very enjoyable day.’



Indeed, the stewards were Wycombe’s star performers yet again according to the Shrews…

From the minute I entered the stadium confines, I was greeted warmly and made to feel that I was a welcome guest. An absolute pleasure to attend the game and something that the powers that be at The Prostar could take a few lessons from. Stewards do not have to be oppressive and aggressive to carry out their role successfully.’
