Wycombe: The Opposition View

Following yesterday’s 1-1 draw with Port Vale, here are some views on the game from Valiants’ manager Dean Glover and a few of their fans.

Glover told the Sentinel newspaper that he was delighted with the performance of his youth team players who had made the step up to first team action.

‘It could have been a tough afternoon for our young players, but that’s how much confidence we have in them. If you look at people like Danny, Thommo and James, those lads have played in the reserves as well this week. We’ve asked a lot of them but they have done exceptionally well,’ he said.

The Vale manager felt his side had started too slowly and allowed Wycombe to gain in confidence.

‘They like to get the ball forward quickly and I don’t think we did that enough in the first half ourselves. Once we won the ball we went too square and our passes got cut out. That put us on the back foot,’ said Glover.

Overall, the Vale boss was content, saying: ‘I was very pleased for the lads. We could have won it at the end, and in the second half, we had a chance cleared off the line.’

‘I’m pleased that we got the goal, that gave everybody a massive boost and we dealt with one of the top sides in our league,’he said.

Most Vale fans were preoccupied with their anti-Glover protests, but as always, some found time to call us average and criticize our support.

‘I thought Wycombe would have been better and I was shocked at how few supporters came. They did make a fair noise though. We didn’t get out of second gear today and I don’t think Wycombe did either. Thought they would have had more urgency about them given the circumstances.’

‘Our lads deserve some credit. A youthful side were given a run-out and got a draw against one of the high flyers.’

‘Wycombe were awful. If it wasn’t for their keeper making a double save and one off the line we would have won. Was a great goal for them though – great passing move. But for a team who could have won promotion they brought an absolutely shocking away following off 932. Don’t deserve promotion for that.’

‘Wycombe proved that there isn’t much between the top and bottom of this league except a bit of consistency.’

‘The game saw us pegged back for long periods by an average Wycombe team whose only real quality was strength.’

‘Our Youth team lads did well today against one of the promotion contenders. Give credit where it’s due, we looked a well organised side which made Wycombe look ordinary.’

‘It was a very poor game in which neither side did anything to really deserve a win.’

The Valiant wrote:
‘Wycombe lacked urgency considering the occasion. Surely they had more than 900 fans there, it’s truly poor. Credit to those who did come though, good backing for your team.’

‘They only had one song and one drum beat! If we were in the same position we would have easily taken 3 or 4 thousand.’

‘What a Mickey Mouse tin pot club. Pathetic following. They were very loud and supportive though, I will give them that.’

Here’s hoping next week’s Opposition View is the last of the season.
