Alan Parry talks about Peter Taylor’s departure

Wycombe Wanderers have parted company with manager Peter Taylor by mutual consent.


Despite leading Wycombe to promotion last season, a poor start to life in League One has led to Taylor and his assistant Junior Lewis leaving the club with immediate effect.

The Chairboys’ Associate Director and Head of Media, Alan Parry told Sky Sports News:

“Peter did an honourable job at Wycombe. He guided the club from League Two and it was the first automatic promotion in the club’s Football League history.”

“Unfortunately he wasn’t able to carry on that trend at the start of this season in the higher division, albeit he did have to face some difficulties on the field and off.”

“We had a very difficult start in terms of the fixtures. We had to play Charlton, Leeds and Norwich, obviously the three biggest clubs in the division, all in the first four games. And instead of hitting the ground running, we hit rock-bottom right from the start and results have gone on that way.”

Referring to the manner of Taylor’s departure, Parry said:

“He’s an honourable and honest man. There was no question of him being pushed. He went to the owner Steve Hayes and said – Look, I realise in this situation there’s only one solution for my good and for the club’s good as well – and mutually it’s been agreed that he leaves.”


The off-field difficulties Parry refers to, could be the contentious takeover which many supporters feel new owner Steve Hayes forced on the club in the summer when he threatened to take the Chairboys into administration if Trust members didn’t vote to remove obstacles to his 100% ownership.

The timing of the coup upset many fans, with Peter Taylor himself quoted as saying that he hadn’t even been given a playing budget for the forthcoming season and as a result had lost out on many of his summer transfer targets.

It was rumoured at the time that Taylor was considering leaving the club but he remained in place, only for today’s announcement to signal the final parting of the ways.


Richard Dobson, the head of Wanderers’ youth development, will take temporary charge of the first team for tomorrow’s game at Gillingham while the club search for a new manager.
