The Blues finally hit the goal trail this afternoon in an entertaining 3-2 win at Cambridge United.

Stuart Beavon bagged his third and fourth goals of the pre-season campaign and new signing Richard Logan completed the scoring with his second headed goal since arriving from Exeter City.

The hosts started well and created as many chances as Gary Waddock’s men during a first-half that finished with honours even at 1-1.

Beavon hit the post after 25 minutes and McCoy saw his long-range effort saved a couple of moments later, but that was it for the Blues until Beavon scored the opener after 38 minutes when Cambridge made a hash of defending a Sam Wood corner.

United equalised a few minutes before the break when Bull conceded a penalty and then saved it only for Andy Pugh to follow up his initial effort and slot home the rebound.

Wycombe created more chances in the second half, particularly when they changed their shape to a more attacking formation with an hour of the game gone.

Beavon grabbed his second of the game after 63 minutes when he tucked the ball home after McCoy’s long throw was nodded into the danger area by Logan.

Wycombe’s third goal followed three minutes later when a Dennis Oli cross was headed home by Logan from an incredibly tight angle at the back post.

McCoy cleared the ball off the line to thwart the U’s before one of their defenders did the same at the other end to keep out a shot from Wood.

Beavon had a late chance to complete his hat-trick but steered it wide of the post.

Adam Marriott scored a well-taken second for the U’s with virtually the last kick of the game.

Wycombe’s final pre-season game is at home to Brentford on Tuesday evening. After that the real stuff begins and Wycombe fans can only hope that Beavon is still around when it does.

Wycombe line-up
