Wycombe Wanderers entertain Yeovil Town on Tuesday in their 31st league game of the season.

The league table currently shows Wycombe in 20th place with 26 points from 30 games and Yeovil in 19th spot with 27 points from 29 games.

Wycombe’s Home Record…W 5 – D 2 – L 8 – Pts 17…Ppg 1.13 (Rank-17)

Yeovil’s Away Record………W 1 – D 7 – L 6 – Pts 10…Ppg 0.71 (Rank-20)

Saturday’s attempt to park the bus and nick a point at Bramall Lane failed, and the Blues fell to their 18th league defeat of the season.

The result was expected and accepted by many Wycombe fans who believe that it’s the games against their fellow strugglers that will determine whether or not they stay up at the end of the season.

The Blues have sixteen games still to play, eight are against teams currently in the top half of the table and eight against teams from the bottom.

To break it down further, five of the remaining games are against sides currently in the top third (1-8), six are against sides in the middle (9-16) and five against sides in the bottom third (17-24).

Of the five crucial games against clubs currently sharing the bottom third with Wycombe, four are away from home and only one is at Adams Park – tomorrow’s clash with Yeovil Town.

Out of that lot, Wycombe probably have to find another 19 points to give themselves a total of 45 and a chance of survival.

Looking back at the last thirty seasons since three points were first awarded for a win, the lowest number of points required to survive the drop from this division was 45 in both 2000 and 2002.

In 2000, after 30 games the fifth bottom team had 28 points.

In 2002, after 30 games, the fifth bottom team had 31 points.

Wycombe are currently fifth bottom after 30 games with only 26 points which suggests that it may be a record low number of points required to stay up this season. Let’s hope so.

Getting back to tomorrow’s game, the stats suggest there’s barely a fag paper between the two sides.

However, since joining the Football League Wycombe have never beaten Yeovil who have won four and drawn one of the five clashes.

Since Gary Waddock took charge, the Glovers have beaten the Blues three times, thrashing them 4-0 at Huish Park and 4-1 at Adams Park two seasons ago, and edging a drab encounter 1-0 in Somerset during the current campaign.
