Blues improve but the goal drought continues

The Blues were beaten by top flight opposition for the second time in three days but tonight’s performance was a big improvement on Saturday’s defeat to Fulham.

Goals from Jamie Mackie (30), Shaun Wright-Phillips (71) and Nedum Onuoha (87) were enough to send the visitors home happy, but there were positives for the Wycombe fans to take home too.

Nikki Bull made some fine saves in the first-half and his understudy Matt Ingram produced the save of the night when he flew across his goal to tip Hogan Ephraim’s rasping shot over the crossbar.

Young defenders Anthony Stewart and Charles Dunne gained more valuable experience with Stewart particularly impressive in the centre of Wycombe’s back four.

Marvin McCoy demonstrated the value of pace at the back by twice using his speed over the ground to prevent a certain goal.

Matt Bloomfield, Stuart Lewis and Matt Spring were all combative in central-midfield with the Blues enjoying far more possession than they did on Saturday and in more advanced areas too.

With two shots each, wingers Lee Angol and Joel Grant were the only players to attempt to beat Rob Green, and having drawn a blank in their last four outings, Wycombe’s lack of a cutting edge remains a concern.

Their next chance to score is at Cambridge United on Saturday afternoon.
