Following recent stories in various media, Wycombe Wanderers have officially confirmed that Jordon Ibe has signed for Premier League side Liverpool.
The expected news comes with minimal detail. The Blues’ official website simply states that an agreement has been reached between the two clubs. There are no details over any contract or timescales involved, presumably due to the fact that Ibe has only just turned 16, and is still to take his GCSEs, never mind start as an apprentice.
There is also no mention of any fee whatsoever, although other media state it is ‘undisclosed’. All of this comes as no surprise since the clamour over Ibe’s future began following his first-team ‘debut’ in a pre-season friendly against Staines Town in July.
He scored in that game and made his competitive debut in the League Cup victory over rivals Colchester United in August at just 15 years and 244 days of age. His first appearance in the Football League came as a late substitute in a 3-1 victory at Hartlepool United in October.
He marked his first league start for the Wanderers in sensational style a fortnight later with a spectacular solo goal in a 2-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday at Adams Park. It was a historic moment as he became the youngest ever scorer for the club in its 124-year history.
Ibe joined the club’s youth system back in 2007, at just 12 years of age, after the Bermondsey-born striker had been released by his local side Charlton Athletic. His progress has come under the tutelage of Richard Dobson and both deserve praise as his footballing progress has taken him to Anfield today.
He could end up working under Liverpool first-team coach Kevin Keen, who still holds the record as Wycombe Wanderers youngest ever player when he came on as a substitute in a 4-3 win at Hendon in September 1982 aged just 15 and 209 days.
