The Opposition View

Following Wycombe’s 1-1 draw at Swindon Town yesterday afternoon, here are some views on the game from Robins’ manager Danny Wilson and a few of their fans.

Ruing the loss of two points after Wycombe’s late equaliser, Wilson told his club’s official website:

‘We let them in at the death. We started giving possession away and didn’t do the right things.’

‘The pressure we put ourselves under by not keeping hold of the ball was a worry. We didn’t do that well enough in the second half but we should have held out. It was a mistake at the back post, a combination of things.’

Wilson felt his side had enough chances to make the game safe and was particularly disappointed with the one they ‘spurned right at the end.’

‘Some of the play was very good,’ he said, ‘but we need to apply the finish. Whether we are trying to walk the ball into the net, I don’t know, but we will keep working at it.’

‘We need to be better at home,’ said Wilson, ‘especially in front of goal. That’s been our story for a little while and that’s why we can’t see teams off.

The Swindon fans had mixed views on Wycombe’s contribution to the game.

The following extracts are from ‘The Town End’, ‘This is Swindon Town’, BBC606, ‘Football Forums’ and ‘The Football Forum.’

Samdy Gray wrote:
‘On balance, I think it was a fairly even game. We bossed the first half and they probably just nudged the second. We should’ve won though, their keeper was poor all game but then pulled off an absolute blinder to deny Paynter at the end.’

‘Definitely two points dropped. When we didn’t go on and get the second goal it was always likely to happen as they only needed one chance, which we gave them right at the end.’

‘We weren’t good enough today because we didn’t kill the game off after we had more than enough possession and chances to do it. Wilson cost us the game with his, quite frankly, bizarre subs.’

‘I thought Wycombe were a game side who moved the ball around and caused us some problems, although they never looked likely to score apart from the sitter in the first minute.’

‘I thought we totally outplayed Wycombe over the 90 minutes and should have won by 2 goals. The defence and midfield were fine, the glaringly obvious problem was up front.’

‘I thought Wycombe were utter tripe and there for the taking. Why we didn’t finish them off I’ll never know, but we lost our shape in the second half and despite the fact that Wycombe created few chances, an equaliser seemed inevitable.’

‘We totally blew it and to top it off we missed a sitter in stoppage time from Paynter which we didn’t deserve anyway. Wycombe were full value for their point and fair play to them for having a good go at it in the 2nd half.’

redfellow wrote:
‘Wycombe equalized with virtually their only shot on target in the whole match. They are a poor side who will go down and had Wilson got the tactics right today we would have got the killer second goal earlier in the game and probably gone on to win the match 3 or 4 nil.’

‘I’ve said it before this season, and today proves it, our front line couldn’t score in a house of ill repute.’

‘Thought Wycombe were very poor. Reminded me of Hereford last season, hard working side but not much else.’

‘Wycombe were there for the taking and any decent team would have put 4 past them. The Wycombe fans were loud though and made a lot of noise for most the game. Well done to them. They’re in for a struggle.’

‘The mindless banging of that drum just about killed any chance of an atmosphere. If that din is played week in week out at Wycombe then I reckon they’re probably down a good 2,000 supporters just for that alone.

‘Very disappointing today against what looked a poor League Two outfit, but they showed that if you hang in there you can get something.

‘I thought Wycombe were the better team first half and second half. Fans should stop running down this league. I’ve watched a lot of football at this level, and I think this is the best quality 3rd tier since we won it in 1996. Wycombe weren’t great, but I think on balance of play they should have won today. Zebroski, Betsy, Pittman and Phillips are all dangerous, it’s just we’ve got a better defence. Some people have very short memories. I heard a few saying, oh my god, we’re being out-played by Wycombe. But I remember a few years ago they gave us a football lesson at home in the league cup. Completely battered us with Easter and Betsy. They’ve been a respectable league side for a long time now.’

With positivity like that, there may be a job waiting for Spencer at WWFC Media.

Nothing wrong with a point away from home though, and with two home games in a row next week against bottom-six sides, things could soon be looking up.

Next Game: Tranmere Rovers at Adams Park on Tuesday 29th September at 7.45pm.
