The Opposition View

Following yesterday’s home defeat to Leyton Orient, here are some views on the game from O’s manager Geraint Williams, their match winner Scott McGleish, and a few of their fans.


Speaking to his club’s official website, Williams described the win as “a big 90 minute performance.”

“It was a case of – ‘well done lads, we really earned that.’ We put the work in, we defended properly, we had a lot of set-pieces to deal with against a big side, and we got our reward,” said the Orient boss.

Williams felt his side were stronger in the second half and had created four or five really good chances including Scott McGleish’s winning goal.

“Football’s a funny old game like that,” he said, “He had a great chance earlier and you thought maybe it wasn’t going to be his day, but typical Scott, he kept on going. It was another good ball into the box, Scott threw himself at it and it was a fantastic finish.”


McGleish also spoke to his club’s website after what he called “a big win for us.”

Referring to his previous connection with the Chairboys, McGleish said: “I wouldn’t say it was sweeter because I’ve scored against my former club. I still have mates there and I wouldn’t like to see them go down, but I’m an Orient player and I wanted three points, so I was delighted to get the goal.”

The Orient striker felt his side created a lot of chances and played some good football.

“I think we deserved the win for our second half performance,” he said. “I’ve gone through and tried to dink the keeper but he’s saved it. I had another shot wide and Andros (Townsend) had a couple go over the bar. We played some good football and I’m thankful the goal came along.”



The Orient fans didn’t think much of the game or Wycombe’s chances of scoring enough goals to avoid relegation.

‘Poor game between two very similar football clubs. Wycombe, despite forcing 20 corners were just as clueless as us up top. The difference in the end was the 200+ goal veteran McGleish who stuck away a difficult header. Matt Harrold huffed and puffed but will never be a natural goalscorer. The only place I can see these two clubs next season is League Two, 0-0 would’ve been fair, but from our view we’ve got something to hold on to.’

‘A good battling performance from the lads, but let’s not get carried away, yesterday was a game with no quality on show from either team. We laboured to a win and once in front couldn’t hold on to the ball and had to dig in with some real backs-to-the-wall defending. Wycombe’s only real threat came down the wings and that was dealt with by our two full backs’

I think he’s wrong there. I can definitely see us scoring one more goal at some point.
