Following Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Grimsby Town, here are some views from the Mariners’ manager and a few of their fans.

New Grimsby boss Mike Newell told the Grimsby Telegraph : ‘It was a dream start for us. You could not have wished for anything more.’

‘I am obviously disappointed not to win but it was always going to be a long 89 minutes, leading 1-0 against a side that is unbeaten this season and have only conceded three goals.’

Newell went on to say :

‘I can see why they are where they are. They are a physical side and have a presence. So it was always going to be hard for us but I couldn’t fault the lads for their effort and commitment.I am obviously disappointed not to win.’

‘The players are obviously disappointed to concede so late but it is our job to make sure they don’t get too down. Wycombe are not in a false position but we have to make sure that Grimsby’s position is a false one.’

The Grimsby fans were pleased with their team’s efforts and were generally complimentary about the Chairboys.

The following extracts were taken from internet forums ‘The Fishy’, BBC 606 and the Official Grimsby Town Message Board.

‘It was hard to believe that the players playing today were the very same players who started the season.’

‘I really enjoyed the game. Wycombe looked like they are in a false position, i.e. should have gone up the last 2 years and again playing the best football in the Division. They must go up this year. I thought Town played well, but had to defend well.’

‘A point against the top team in the league! Anyone who thinks this is anything short of a fantastic start for the new manager is nuts.’

‘Not a good challenge and certainly deserved a yellow, but not a red, more OTT refereeing I’m afraid, the way we are going football will soon be turned into a non-contact sport. I thought Town did OK, absolutely no faulting the effort, but I feel we sat too far back after the early goal, probably lack of confidence and allowed Wycombe to dominate for too long. Town need a big, strong targetman asap, wish we had got Harrold before he went to Wycombe, we had him on loan a couple of years ago and he is the sort of physical presence we are currently lacking up front.’

‘Town played with lots of effort and commitment today and were rightly given lots of applause at full time, despite the disappointment of losing that late goal. It was always going to be difficult and Wycombe will be fighting for promotion this season. We were hanging on at times and Barnes made at least two outstanding fingertip saves.’

‘Good solid start in a game we would of lost two weeks ago. Although 2 points lost, Wycombe are a quality team.’
