The Opposition View – Accrington

Following yesterday’s gritty 2-0 win at Accrington, here are some views on the game from Stanley manager Leam Richardson and a few of their fans.

“Very poor, lacklustre and not enjoyable, that’s the worst we’ve been for a long time,” said Richardson in his post-match interview.

“Before I took over and after I took over, I can’t remember a performance like that.”

“The damage was done within the first half. I’ll never have a go at the lads when they apply themselves properly, but today they didn’t do that.”

“We wanted a positive start, we really fancied to win the game today, but Wycombe have come and done a job.”

“Everything they did was geared towards a win, especially when they went in front, they had a few niggles and a lot of time wasting but they’ve come to do a job. They’ve come from down south up here to win a game of football and they’ve done that, so fair play to them.”

“The players know in no uncertain terms how I feel. We didn’t really stand up and be counted at all.”


The Accrington fans were disappointed with their own side’s performance but still had a few kind words to say about Wycombe.

‘We were totally inept today and continued with our kick and rush tactics even against ten men, continually over-hitting balls over the top and failing to make our one-man advantage count. At half time I was seriously considering leaving, which would have been the very first time in my almost 60 years of watching footie. It was only the false hope that Wycombe gave by getting a man sent off which kept me till the bitter end with feet like blocks of ice.’

‘Up until the last 10 minutes or so we were awful BUT do those who saw fit to boo the lads off at the end of the first half (& it sounded like there were quite a few) really believe that helped matters? Sorry, but I am of the mind that no matter what may be happening on the pitch, you do not boo your own team – disgraceful in my opinion.’

‘Wycombe were a good, well organised and committed team. We were anything but. The best teams this season are the most functional. We must bring some industry into our team to match our ability to play the ball. We are now 19th and will continue to slip unless things improve dramatically.
