The Opposition View – Barnet

Following yesterday’s goalless draw at home to Barnet, here are some views on the game from the Bees’ player-coach Edgar Davids and a few of their fans.

Davids was unhappy at the way his team faded in the second-half.

“In the first half we started slowly but then we had a spell where we were backing them in a corner,” he said.

“We played some good football, created triangles and that`s what we have practiced.”

“In the second half I didn`t recognised the team. We played long balls all the time and we went a couple of steps back.”

“The guys need to be confident but the most important thing is that we kept a clean sheet again.”

“We play as a team and sometimes it works well and sometimes it doesn`t but the clean sheet is important and we now have to work on the football.”


The Barnet fans were reasonably pleased with another clean sheet and a point away from home.

Second half the passing game disappeared and Wycombe were the better side, had 3-4 chances that they could easily have scored and came close to being awarded a pen at the end. ‘Not much up front from either side, however we put in a good away performance which frustrated Wycombe. This was definitely the sort of match we’d have lost pre-Davids. With more up front we could have won – but then Wycombe could say the same thing. Overall a good point, second successive clean sheet, still a long way to go but things are looking much better.’

‘Slow start to the first half but then we really got into it. Some of the one touch passing and movement was some of the best I’ve seen from a Barnet side. Not sure what happened at half time but we came out deflated and couldn’t reproduce anything like our first half performance. We absorbed more and more pressure as the half went on. By injury time we were being bombarded 3 or 4 times a minute and were lucky not to concede.’

Surely these are the sort of games that we must be winning in order to make up the deficit at the bottom. What left me rather dismayed was the way Wycombe made a couple of subs which clearly freshened things up for them and all of a sudden they started looking really threatening. Yet we just sat back and left things as they were. It could have been costly had they been a bit more clinical in front of goal. At least they created chances, which is more than can be said for us.’
