The Opposition View – Barnet

Following yesterday’s 1-0 defeat to relegation threatened Barnet at the final ever game to be played at Underhill, here are some views on the one-sided contest from Bees player-coach Edgar Davids and a few of their understandably elated fans.

“This match, in emotional terms, is as good as anything I`ve experienced with Holland at Euro 2000 or any of the big clubs that I`ve been involved in.”

‘We created enough chances to win the game but we had to really battle to get it. We came in with a mission and we started with our foot on the gas. We really went for it from the first minute right up until the last minute. Wycombe couldn’t deal with our pressure – we were pushing right up inside their half. “

‘If you believe from the first minute to the last that you will win, most of the time you will get that chance. And with Jake, if you miss a lot chances, the laws of football suggest that you will eventually be able to score. “

“We scored ten minutes before time and I thought that was fantastic. We added a little bit of drama with the penalty as well. It was surreal. I thought ‘not again`. We have a tendency of making errors in the last minute, it is a negative trademark we have. “

“I didn`t think Stacky would save it to be honest but that is because nine times out of ten penalties are scored. But when he saved it, it was great. I could not have written a better scenario.”

“The guys really defended Underhill with pride and as our fortress, because we have not lost many games here at home. It was a wonderful atmosphere in front of a sold-out crowd. The players put great effort in and everyone played with big heart. “

Meanwhile Gareth Ainsworth said afterwards: “We barely turned up. It`s the worst we`ve played for a long time.”

Barnet fans were overjoyed with their thoroughly deserved victory and a fairytale end to 106 years at their unique Underhill home. With the exception of goalkeeper Matt Ingram, they didn`t think much of the visitors display, but much like the Wycombe players themselves, they couldn`t care less.

“Unbelievable drama today – really couldn’t have been scripted any better. It was a bit of a tame penalty though, which almost made me wonder whether the guy took pity on us a bit.”

“We were good value for the win overall, with their keeper making a couple of blinding saves, and numerous other chances missed. The return to playing two wide men transformed the quality of our play as compared to the previous 2 home games, and surely Edgar must continue with that shape next week.”

“Wycombe offered very little going forward, though there was that rather scrappy disallowed goal in the second half, which had me a bit bemused, as I couldn’t quite pinpoint why it was ruled out.”

“What a great day out! I thought the club did a good job with the pre-match arrangements on the cricket ground. The supporters were in good voice.”

“The team dominated the match (the BBC has us down with 21 attempts and Wycombe just 2). We nearly threw it away with a silly penalty, but Stack pulled off a great save.”
