The Opposition View – Burton Albion

Following yesterday’s thoroughly enjoyable 3-0 win over Burton Albion, here are some views on the game from the Brewers’ manager Gary Rowett and a disappointingly small selection of their fans.

The Burton boss felt the referee ruined his team’s chances by dismissing defender Zander Diamond and awarding Wycombe a penalty.

“In the first half we weren’t quite good enough but we still got into some good areas and put some balls into the box that we needed to do more with,” said Rowett in his post-match interview.

Ruing Matt McClure’s opening goal, he said: “It was a poor goal to concede I felt. To let the lad win the header in the way he did – we’re a lot bigger and stronger in there and we should really have won that first header. Then we backed off in the box, which again I felt was suicidal, and the lad’s followed it in.”

“I just felt that at times we got balls into their box and it drops and no one really anticipates it or shows enough drive to get on the end of it.”

“We forced eight or nine corners and we needed to capitalise on that… but one decision can change an awful lot of things.”

“It’s awful when you’ve got ten men. I thought the referee, whatever way you look at it, has changed the game.”

“I didn’t agree with the decision for the penalty and certainly not for the sending off. I’ve spoken to their manager and he said the first one wasn’t a penalty, but the second one was a penalty. I just felt after that, we struggled to get to grips with the game.”

“Our performance wasn’t good enough again, and that’s two games in a row where we needed to do so much better.”

Obviously feeling a little hard done by, Rowett went on to say: “Things gall you. When I see that Winfield’s made about 35 fouls on Calvin (Zola) during the game, and the ref (eventually) talks to him in the 90th minute, I just find that very, very hard to understand, and I’ll go and speak to the ref and ask him his opinion.”

Asked if he will appeal Diamond’s red card, the Burton boss wasn’t so sure, saying: “Well. I think we’ll have to have a little look at it, it’s a bit too soon to think about that.”

After an emphatic win it would have been nice to read what the Burton fans thought of our performance, but their popular forum ‘clough the magic dragon’ has recently closed down, and their new one is impenetrable to outsiders and only accepts new members by recommendation.

The best I could do was find a few unhappy Burton fans on Twitter…..

‘Wow, that was flipping painful. Lost 3-0 at the bottom team. Burton were awful again. I think the small handful of fans who clapped the team off were only doing it to be polite. They don’t deserve anything. Amazing how much watching your favourite football team play an absolute shocker can spoil your mood.’
