The Opposition View – Mansfield

In the wake of Saturday’s dismal result and performance against Mansfield Town , here is some reaction from the Stags’ manager Paul Cox and a few of their fans.

Cox was understandably delighted with the three points and felt they were justified: ‘I thought we personally deserved that and most importantly we looked hungry,’ he said.

‘When we do believe in ourselves we have good players and become a great team. We have always got chances in us’ he continued.

‘We defended very well and the three centre-backs in particular were excellent. We have looked very strong defensively in the last two games.’

Striker Ollie Palmer ,who was once a target for Wycombe, was also over the moon as he fulfilled a life-long dream after scoring his first goal as a professional footballer: ‘It was great to score my first goal, it is something I have always dreamed of.’

‘I was just in the right place at the right time, it is hard to describe what I am feeling right now’.

‘I should have had two goals really, but it is not about me, it is about the team and it is great to have our first three points,’ said Palmer.

‘As a team we defended really well, not just the defenders but as a whole team. We knew that the first goal would come eventually, and we will work hard to keep this run going.’

‘This league is a step up for me, it is faster and more powerful and you don`t get as much time on the ball as you do in the Conference South,’ concluded the big striker.

Comments from the Stags’ supporters were in short supply but the ones I could find focused more on their first victory in the Football League since April 2008 than on the thoroughly lamentable performance of their hosts.

The following extracts are taken from Twitter and Chad.

@jallsop93 ‘I reckon Ollie Palmer is going to become a big player for us, top performance and we got what we deserved today!’

@shawma1 ‘The Stags thoroughly deserved the victory and should have won by more goals. Indeed Palmer should have added a second when he was clean through on goal, but instead of going round the keeper, he elected to shoot and the keeper saved. Wycombe were poor, but upped their game in injury time and twice came close to an equaliser which would have been a travesty’.

stagman1966 ‘A very welcome first goal for Palmer, and three points for the Stags. Cracking result. Keep it up boys!’

@walkerlewis ‘Still flying high from that Stags win. If we can keep that kind of performance up we can easily finish mid-table’.

@MrChrisNeilson ‘Enjoyed my day down in Wycombe to see the Stags get a deserved win!’

SteveWilson ‘I had that ‘Feel Good’ feeling when the Team Sheet was handed out in the bar. To see the Team with Clem & Hutch in it was a great sight, the two best technically gifted players at the Club. The game as a whole, we dominated except for a few blips where we gave the opposition chances to score but as everyone knows you don’t dominate for 90 minutes’.

LloydyStag ‘Wycombe had 4 different price bands up to 25 yrs, free parking for cars with 4 people in. or if you arrived early and so on and so on, but the gate only equalled our first home fixture gate’.

Next game: Oxford United vs Wycombe Wanderers, Saturday 24th August, 3pm
