The Opposition View – Plymouth

In the wake of yesterday`s 1-0 defeat at home to Plymouth, here are some thoughts on the game from the Pilgrims` manager John Sheridan and a few of their fans.

“The most important thing is trying to get three points from each game we play, and I think it was a great response after the disappointment of Saturday, to come and keep a clean sheet and win,” said Sheridan.

“Wycombe have been playing well of late, and they have got some decent players in their team, but I think we deserved to win.”

“We could have passed the ball a little bit better. We didn`t move it around quickly enough and get our wing-backs in the game, but we did it a little bit more in the second half.”

Commenting on the winning goal, the Plymouth boss said: “It was a great finish. He (Hourihane) has got that in his locker. When he’s in that area he usually hits the target.”

“When you score the first goal it gives you something to hold on to, and we’ve done that. Wycombe had one or two corners near the end, but to be fair I felt comfortable most of the game.”

“If you can keep possession of the ball in the opposition`s half it gives you a better chance, and I thought we did that in the second half and were unfortunate not to score one or two more goals.”

The Plymouth fans were happy to take the points from an awful game of football.

“A comfortable win against a poor Wycombe tonight. They were a shadow of the side that beat us 3-0 at HP.”

‘Both teams were catastrophically incompetent. After the goal we looked better and deserved the win but it was not even close to being a promotion level performance.’

“Poor fare throughout the first-half really in which we started brightly (5 mins) dominated possession for long periods but lacked ideas. The second-half started much as the first, but this time we took advantage. Overall though Wycombe just weren’t that good and we defended reasonably comfortably. In summary, we weren’t great but Wycombe were, in my opinion, very poor – hence we did easily enough to win.”

“They were truly awful at times while we looked far more fluid on the ball. The game was there for the taking, but we didn’t really take it, we edged it in truth. It’s indicative of the flatness of this league that Wycombe were unbeaten in six before the match tonight – how that happened is anyone’s guess.”

“I thought we looked hesitant in the first half, but WW were pretty ordinary and couldn’t take advantage of our ‘out of sortsness.’ Second half, different story, we looked refreshed, alive and keen to take them on. Fantastic support in a very good away end, Lots of familiar faces, lots of laughs not a great pitch, but a friendly club.”

‘For me it was a very ‘iffy’ performance first half. For the first 10 minutes we looked great but after that we looked a different team and gave the ball away far too often. We also looked predictable, but thankfully Wycombe didn’t take advantage. Second half we were far better and pressure led to Wycombe making mistakes.’

“As usual, Wycombe away was one of the dullest games of the season. 0-0 would have been perfectly fair. They were never gonna score, despite us inviting them to try for much of the 2nd half.”

‘I thought the Wycombe centre-back pairing were pretty solid and the full backs knew to close down our wingers quickly. They were well drilled and organised but as has been said they didn’t do a great deal going forward.’

‘I liked Wycombe – never seen us win there before, in several visits, but a nice friendly club and I hope they stay up. Nelson was my MoM. Really admire his swashbuckling runs forward – you’ve got to have bottle to do that as a defender (and know your team-mates will cover you) because it really makes a difference having an unexpected extra man in the attack but if you get it wrong and get caught in possession, you’ll look a right charlie and everyone will point the finger.’

“A strange game where I always felt we were better than them, but it somehow didn’t click. Great strike by Conor. I thought we got caught in possession far too often in the middle of the park, but fortunately they weren’t good enough to capitalise.”

“Hourihane did really well to keep the shot down. It was right in front of me and I thought he should have hit it first time, and that he would be closed down. Shows what I know – he slammed it in. What a miserable place to go to watch football. Difficult to park anywhere near the ground without risking a major hold up on the way out.”

‘Good team performance on an uneven pitch. Reuben worked really hard and could barely walk at the end. Hourinane goal was one of those moments which make following Argyle so great.

‘First half dire by both teams. Was hoping the 4th official would put a minus sign before the time he put up on his board to put everyone out of their misery. Good goal – Then more nothingness. Then some Wycombe pressure. Then a run by Nelson from one end of the pitch to the other the audacity of which made Ruben Reid laugh. Then the game ended and we won. Super turn out by the Green Army, but any atmosphere was sucked out of the crowd by the fare on display on the pitch. But we won so hey ho.’
