Following yesterday’s 3-1 victory over the Shrimpers which clinched promotion at the expense of the Shrews, here’s some reaction from Southend and Shrewsbury.

Southend boss Paul Sturrock said….

“I’m a bit disappointed with the goals we lost, the first two were Southend-made and put them on the front foot and gave them confidence.”

“The whole complexion changed, but I wish Wycombe all the best, they’ve been a good side all season and they deserve their promotion.”

‘I have never seen such a one sided refereeing performance. This ref is rumoured to be heading for the Premiership soon. He was dire! He hardly gave us a decision the whole game. The first goal was offside, the second was handball (the player practically caught it before putting the ball in the net!) and he allowed that thug Dave Winfield to punch, kick & elbow. The boys in Voltage Cherry gave it a good go and wanted to stop Wycombe from going up, but I think a brown envelope must have been passed!’

‘To be fair, Wycombe are one of the best teams I’ve seen this season. They looked really nervous early doors (or it could have been shock at our electric pink shirts) and could have been a couple down. Once they scored, they took over and we were lucky it was only three.’

‘We started really brightly and in the first 15 minutes I thought we might have been 2 or 3 up…we seemed to have acres of space on the right and Hall and Clohessy were having a field day. Then the wheels fell off…another mistake clearing from back and some poor defending and before you know it we are behind. Never really posed any problems after that!’

Shrewsbury manager Graham Turner said…..

“We have 79 points and six weeks ago I would have expected that to be good enough to go up with a number of teams in contention, but it wasn’t to be and now we must move on and prepare for the play-offs.”

Shrews striker Matt Harrold tweeted……

“Well done to Wycombe today.”

‘Congrats Wycombe, great set of results for you near the end of the season, hopefully we can carry our form into the playoffs and join you in league one next season.’

‘Congratulations Wycombe – it seems that no matter what result we had you equalled or bettered it in recent weeks.’

‘Well done Wigglesworth Wanderers.’

‘If you win comfortably at Bury after they’ve just beaten the league leaders, with Bury knowing they could go top, it shows you are a good side and deserve to be up there. We should have beaten Wycombe comfortably in both games this season, but we didn’t put our chances away, and that’s our fault and our fault only.’

That’s it for another season, see you in League One and thanks for reading Vital Wycombe.
