Wycombe: The Opposition View

Following Wycombe Wanderers’ crucial 2-1 win at Darlington last night, here are some views on the the game from Quakers’ manager Dave Penney and a few of their fans.

The Darlington boss was disappointed at conceding another late goal to the Chairboys.

Speaking to the Darlington & Stockton Times, he said: ‘That’s twice Wycombe have done us in injury time.’

Penney felt that his side only had themselves to blame for Chris Zebroski’s late winner:

‘We should’ve been more professional and cleared the ball better before the corner,’ he said.

‘It was one of several wrong decisions we made that had me wondering what we were doing at times.’

Penney also felt his side hadn’t been effective enough in front of goal:

‘We didn’t help ourselves by shooting from distance because that isn’t us,’ he said. ‘We weren’t on top of our game at all but we battled away and should’ve got something out of it.’

The Darlington fans’ disappointment at losing to such a late goal probably accounts for the sour grapes shown below.

The following extracts are taken from ‘darlo uncovered’ and ‘BBC606’.

‘Out of all the teams who have visited Darlo, Wycombe are the dirtiest by far. Their team have no discipline at all. They should take a good look at their performance and be ashamed of their behaviour in many parts of the game. I really hope they don’t go up because there are teams which deserve it a lot more than they do!’

‘I don’t think Wycombe deserved the three points, a draw would have been fair. The game was poor.’

‘Losing to Wycombe is no big deal as I’d sooner see three southern clubs go up & keep the likes of Rochdale, Bury & Chesterfield down here for easy away games to get to!! They were well organised, as you would expect from a Peter Taylor side. Not very entertaining though. You can tell Taylor is from the same mould as Steve McLaren.’

‘WW wont go up. One of the poorest sides I’ve seen at the Arena.’

‘They were not a good side tonight, we were just poor up front. I thought Lee Sawyer was a good player but he could and should have been sent off for his ‘elbow’ on Kennedy and possibly his reaction to the ref when subbed.’

‘If Wycombe do go up, they need to spend a fair bit in the Summer transfer market.’

‘I think Peter Taylor is one of the most over-rated managers in the game at present and his Wycombe side were poor last night. However, they seem to be on their annual ‘lets cock-up promotion’ run, so I bet that if we survive we will be playing them again next season!’

‘That’s the second time they’ve mugged us with the last kick of the game. What really p***es me off is c**p teams like Wycombe getting the three points and now probably sealing automatic promotion. Wouldn’t mind in the slightest being beaten by a better side like Rochdale, but that lot last night getting three points is hard to take.’

When you look at what’s happening to Darlington at the moment and bear in mind what we’ve done to them in stoppage time on two separate occasions this season, I think we can forgive them some bitterness and just wish them good luck for the future.

There were some reasonable reactions…

‘Was surprised not to see Sawyer sent off but other than that incident didn’t think it was a dirty game really. A draw may have been a fair result but that goal is a massive boost for Wycombe and could be the turning point after the bad run they’ve been on recently.’

and one Quakers fan made a particularly good point…

‘They were a decent looking side and deserved the win. Very big side, looked to play the ball on the ground. Did not like the Wycombe fans’ chants though. I think they need to remember that our situation could happen to anybody and the chant ‘you’re going bust in the morning’ is really a sad song to sing to a fellow lower league fan.’

Very true.
