Wycombe: The Opposition View

Following Wycombe Wanderers’ crucial 2-1 win at Darlington last night, here are some views on the the game from Quakers’ manager Dave Penney and a few of their fans.


The Darlington boss was disappointed at conceding another late goal to the Chairboys.

Speaking to the Darlington & Stockton Times, he said: ‘That’s twice Wycombe have done us in injury time.’

Penney felt that his side only had themselves to blame for Chris Zebroski’s late winner:

‘We should’ve been more professional and cleared the ball better before the corner,’ he said.

‘It was one of several wrong decisions we made that had me wondering what we were doing at times.’

Penney also felt his side hadn’t been effective enough in front of goal:

‘We didn’t help ourselves by shooting from distance because that isn’t us,’ he said. ‘We weren’t on top of our game at all but we battled away and should’ve got something out of it.’



The Darlington fans’ disappointment at losing to such a late goal probably accounts for the sour grapes shown below.

They should take a good look at their performance and be ashamed of their behaviour in many parts of the game. They were well organised, as you would expect from a Peter Taylor side. Not very entertaining though. You can tell Taylor is from the same mould as Steve McLaren.’

When you look at what’s happening to Darlington at the moment and bear in mind what we’ve done to them in stoppage time on two separate occasions this season, I think we can forgive them some bitterness and just wish them good luck for the future.

‘Was surprised not to see Sawyer sent off but other than that incident didn’t think it was a dirty game really. A draw may have been a fair result but that goal is a massive boost for Wycombe and could be the turning point after the bad run they’ve been on recently.’

I think they need to remember that our situation could happen to anybody and the chant ‘you’re going bust in the morning’ is really a sad song to sing to a fellow lower league fan.’
