Wycombe: The Opposition View

Following Wycombe Wanderers 1-0 win over promotion rivals Gillingham yesterday afternoon, here are some views on the game from Gills’ manager Paul Stimson and a few of their fans.



Stimson felt his side were unlucky to take nothing from the game and was pleased with the effort his players put in during the second-half.

Speaking to Kent Online, the Gills boss said:: ‘I don’t think we deserved a defeat. In the first half they were probably better than us but in the second half we battered them but just couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net, but it wasn’t for the want of trying.’

‘I can’t fault the boys’ effort and I think that was appreciated by the people who travelled with us and we have to take that into the remaining four games. If we take that luck, which they had with their goal, which we thought was off-side, then we will be okay.’




The Gillingham fans also felt they deserved something from the game and had mixed views on the merits of their second-half penalty.

‘Cant believe we lost that. Fair play to Wycombe for using the tactic of getting a goal then parking the bus and holding out but we should have taken at least a point from that. Wycombe support is really bad though. There were 6,300 there today and this was meant to be a really big game for them where they were giving out free tickets, but none of their fans sung until the last 5 minutes and even then you couldn’t hear them. We sung the whole time throughout.’

‘First 45 mins was an awful affair with neither side looking interested in making a game of it. Wycombe scored a very simple yet well worked goal to go one-nil up at the break. Second half saw a spirited response with the Gills having a couple of half chances well blocked. The penalty was right in front of me, and was very generous. Can’t really recall Wycombe having more than their one shot on target, so my kneejerk reaction is that a draw would have been a fair result.’

He also seemed intent on making sure he was going to give absolutely nothing to Simeon Jackson, waving away several penalty appeals – including a blatant one – and booking him for diving. Even the one that was given he’d already turned down but had to change his mind as the linesman had a far better view and was flagging wildly.’

Second half we were better. The penalty was soft but the linesmen gave it. The referee gave us nothing all game. ‘I was quite surprised how Wycombe play the game. Having Peter Taylor as manager I thought that they would play a lot more football but they are in fact quite direct. Then again, if we had a player like Harrold we might be a bit more direct. He gave King one of the hardest afternoons that he’s had this season and the fact he got injured was a major bonus for us.’

‘Well done to the linesman for giving the penalty. It definitely was one. I was in the box opposite it and even my Wycombe supporting family admitted it was a penalty. I just think its good that he overruled the ref’s decision, normally they bottle it.’

‘I thought today our support was brilliant and sometimes our team doesn’t deserve us. How many came over to applaud at the end? Not many, which disappointed quite a lot of us. Stimson should be encouraging them to thank us when there’s been a big noisy turn out. Had we been crap, I might understand it, but we dominated the second half and deserved at least a draw.’

‘That was an enjoyable yet incredibly frustrating afternoon of football! Can I just say that Adams Park is quite a nice ground and definitely one of my favourites from the various away trips this year. First half Wycombe were by far the better side but we never really got going. Great pass for the goal as well. Second half was all us, Wycombe were very negative but very organised. As usual our build up play was excellent at times but no end product. Jackson worked tirelessly all afternoon but it just wasn’t his day. Not convinced it was ever a penalty though but the less said about that the better. Great atmosphere for the most part as well.’
