Wycombe: The Opposition View

Following last night’s crucial 1-0 win over Luton Town, here are some views on the game from Hatters’ manager Mick Harford and a few of their fans.

Harford was frustrated at losing to what he described as ‘a sucker punch.’

Speaking to his club’s official website, the Hatters boss bemoaned his fate:

‘I’m sure Peter Taylor will agree when he does his interview, that was one of the most one-sided games I’ve seen this season in terms of possession and the way in which we tried to win the game,’ he said.

‘It was difficult to break them. They hardly came over the halfway line in the second half,’ said Harford, apparently surprised that Wycombe would protect a vital lead which could yet see them promoted.

‘The players are absolutely devastated in the dressing room knowing they’ve lost in that manner.’

‘No disrespect to Wycombe but they have probably gone the longest in terms of direct football and we dealt with it comfortably apart from one lapse and the lad’s mishit that shot. That’s the way it went for us tonight,’ said the unhappy Harford.

The Luton fans’ reaction to Wycombe’s victory was predictably sour. Here are a few of the more pleasant (printable) comments.

The following extracts are taken from ‘Luton Outlaws’ and Football Forums’

John Gaunt OWB wrote:
‘Wycombe were indescribably awful. Summed up by the utterly talentless giraffe they produced towards the end, and the peerless Frank Sinclair who, as ever, looked our best source of creating something.’

‘The five minutes after half time was where the game was won and lost. I don’t want us to be like Wycombe but they were extremely well organised and played to their strengths. The reason that they didn’t do much after they scored was because they didn’t have to, the game was won and they knew it.’

‘The joke is that soon Wycombe will be two divisions above us . They were sh*t, but had one big fast lad and one fast forward supporting him, and any ball banged down would at some point catch us out. Not nice to watch, but effective in the lower league.’

PDW wrote:
‘Wycombe a functional, no-nonsense outfit, rather like their manager – utterly tedious. They won with their only shot on target, a powder puff strike from Akinde which went through Brill. Defensively they are very good. It’s like the Land of the Giants with the likes of McCracken, Oliver and Sinclair back there. Unfortunately they are the type of side who tend to get success at this level.’

SOS wrote:
‘We kept the ball really well, but didn’t have clue how to create a chance or take on a shot. How much of that was down to Wycombe allowing us to play in areas that didn’t hurt them, I don’t know.’

Pessimistic Flange wrote:
‘We should follow the stance set by Southampton FC who have not allowed drums into the stadium since they moved to St Mary’s in 2001. I still have a headache from last night’s drum fest.’

Mad Hatter wrote:
‘Fantastic amount of noise coming from the Wycombe end tonight, I would put them forward as the best fans to visit KR this season.’

LutonSUSD/Bury Park Hatter wrote:
‘They didn’t out-sing us today. Well they did, but without the drum they would have been lost.’

Make your mind up !

Crawley Green Hatter wrote:
‘Wycombe’s support today was fantastic, you have to give them credit.’

El Capitan wrote:
‘If I ever get the chance, I’ll give their drummer a long day out, tied to my garden fence with marmite smeared on his b****** while the rats from the river at the bottom of my garden have a right old feast.’

Well at least they won’t have to put up with our negative football and noisy fans next season.
