Wycombe: The Opposition View

Following last night’s 4-1 victory over AFC Wimbledon in the FA Cup, here are some views from The Dons’ manager, their goalscorer, and a few of their fans.

Wimbledon Manager Terry Brown told The Wimbledon Guardian: ‘We looked very naïve. That is not down to the players but it is down to the way I set them up. We tried to play football from the start and it cost us dearly. I’m disappointed that they didn`t have to do much to score, it wasn’t as though there were 15 passes cutting us open, they were very simple and very effective and we could learn a lot from that.’

Brown went on to say: ‘We didn’t earn the right to play and got done by straight balls into their forwards and midfield players. The goals we gave away I would not want to watch again because they were defensively very naive. We just couldn’t come to terms with the boy Harrold, I thought he was head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch.’

Dons’ scorer Sam Hatton also spoke to the Guardian: ‘Yes I got the goal but it didn’t mean anything. If I’d scored and we’d won then of course I would be happy, but as it is, it’s not something I will remember. Wycombe had very good individuals and they played very well as a team. And it obviously helps if you have someone in your team getting a hat-trick!’

The Wimbledon fans were gracious in defeat.

The following comments are extracts from the Womble Underground Press:

‘I am sure the Team will feel disappointed, but Wycombe were a class apart this evening, strong and pacy.’

Ray wrote:
‘No complaints about the result tonight. Wycombe looked a powerful and well-organised team and we were second best all evening.’

Sam the Don wrote:
‘Historic and in some ways still great night, but can’t help feeling we ever so slightly let ourselves down at the back tonight.’

Lukeyboy wrote:
‘We had our moment on TV, got the money, have learnt a few lessons from a big game and had a massive celebration when we scored. It was a bit like men against boys and you always felt Wycombe could just turn it on, but then that’s why they are where they are.’

Baskers wrote:
‘Wycombe were very good, and everything I expected of them, let’s face it guys, that is their full time job – their bread and butter… If they didn’t beat us, they should seriously question their choice of career. They were a good 4 inches taller than us all over the pitch, a lot stronger and about 10% quicker… reckon they had more in the tank.’

Mikey T wrote:
‘Wycombe were overall the better team, but we matched them in terms of effort, and all four goals would have been prevented with better defending/marking…. a definite case of what might have been.’

Arthur TwoSheds Jackson wrote:
‘We were outpassed, outrun, outbattled, outplayed and out-thought by a professional team who looked like they had much more in the tank.’

‘I was stunned to see a Peter Taylor team press on and score more goals having gone in front – so unlike him.’

‘Wycome are a good side. I can see one or two of their players moving on to bigger clubs especially their goalkeeper.’

‘Have we played against a better player than Matt Harrold since re-forming? I can’t think of any. He was awesome.’

One Dons fan has good hearing:

Diddyman wrote:
‘It was a good crowd……Shame Wycombe fans out sung us. Definitely due to the fact all our singers were scattered around the ground.’

Others perhaps don’t:

JC wrote:
‘ It was a fantastic occasion and a decent atmosphere (were Wycombe even there?!).’

Baskers wrote:
‘ In regards to the Wycombe fans… didn’t notice them until after each one of their goals.’

Sid wrote:
‘Afc Wimbledon showed the world tonight we have the best and loudest fans for any crowd I’ve seen or heard ever.’
