Wycombe: The Opposition View

Following Wycombe’s 1-0 win over promotion rivals Bradford City, here are some views from the Bantams manager Stuart McCall and a few of their fans.

McCall knew he was in for a tough afternoon. Paying tribute to the Blues’ defence, he said: ‘It was a game that we expected to be tight as Wycombe have only conceded six goals all season and today we saw why, they were hard to break down.’

McCall went on to say: ‘The goal was unfortunate as the clearance hit a player and just landed right in front of Hunt, but he put it away well. At times we passed the ball well and I thought we were comfortable and restricted their chances, particularly in the first-half.’

The Bradford boss finished on a complimentary note by saying: ‘It’s always a tough place to come though and I definitely expect them to be up there at the end of the season.’

The Bradford fans’ views were similar to those of most of the teams we have beaten this season. Long may it continue.

The following extracts are from ‘Football Forums’, BBC606 and the ‘Official Bradford City Message Board’

‘I can sum the game up by saying a 0-0 draw would have been a fair result. They were very good at the back but to be honest Conlon and Thorne were both garbage so it wasn’t exactly hard for their defence.’

‘They’re nothing special, strong at the back and long ball, that’s it.’

‘Wycombe’s formation was 3 in the middle , imagine our fans if we played like this at home. Good on Wycombe in my view, grab a goal, stuff the midfield and cut off supply to our front line. Some people think it’s a negative, but it’s playing to your strengths.’

‘I was there today. They just shaded it to be honest. Our forward line was poor apart from Omar who had too much to do.’

‘Basically if we had got a draw today we would have been lucky.’

‘The turning point was them bringing the sub on. They pushed on and we sat back.’

‘Quite disappointed ! We played straight into their hands. As for Wycombe, they’re nowt special! very VERY boring to watch, Wycombe fans deserve a medal watching that dross every week ! ‘

‘Long ball football, strong at the back, that’s all Wycombe offer. Fair play if it gets them out of this league but you cannot do that in League 1. They marked our front men out of the game and wanted it more in midfield. We were unlucky not to get a point. Hats off though well played.’

‘I just think Wycombe are one of those annoying teams who will grind out results luckily and probably get promotion. Hopefully they will get found out at some point but there always seems to be one who slips through every year.’

‘Daley was our only player with much pace and he was being triple marked by the end of the game. For all our build up play we never looked like scoring… Stu left it way too late to change it around. A real shame as Wycombe were not better than us and a win was there for the taking.’

‘Lets look at the difference between the two managers against Wycombe. Wycombe – not working at half time, Taylor makes a change to strikers and team formation. City- no efforts on goal and not working. Half time, no changes. McCall lets us carry on looking ineffective.’

Whatever vanquished opposition fans may think, Wycombe’s own supporters are delighted with their team’s unbeaten start to the league campaign.
