Wycombe Wanderers remain in 4th place despite not playing today and favourable results elsewhere have simply reinforced the fact that automatic promotion remains firmly in their own hands.

You can’t beat League Two for excitement this season and with only one of the top-ten teams winning this afternoon, the promotion race is still wide open with just a handful of games remaining for some of the contenders.

The general consensus of opinion among various ‘stats’ websites seems to be that any team finishing this season with 77 points will almost certainly gain automatic promotion to League One.

Only 7 teams can still achieve that benchmark and their maximum-possible points totals are shown below:

Brentford…….90 points
Wycombe……86 points
Exeter………..83 points
Bury………….82 points
Rochdale…….80 points
Gillingham…..80 points
Chesterfield…78 points

Despite their current good form, it seems a tall order for Chesterfield and if they or anyone else should slip-up badly, there are 7 other teams who remain hopeful of taking 7th place and with it the final play-off spot. Their maximum points totals are shown below:

Shrewsbury….76 points
Bradford……..75 points
Dagenham…..74 points
Lincoln………..73 points
Darlington……72 points
Rotherham…..72 points
Morecambe….71 points

So there we have it. The season ends 4 weeks from today and despite their poor form since the turn of the year, Wycombe Wanderers still have the best opportunity they’ve had in years to win promotion.

It might not be so easy next season.

Come on Wycombe!
