Wycombe: The Opposition View

Following yesterday’s 1-1 draw against Barnet, here are some views from Bees’ manager Ian Hendon and a few of their fans.

Hendon was pleased with the draw, telling the Barnet Times: ‘Any point away from home is a good one. ‘

The Bees’ manager felt his side had the better of the first half and could have been in front at the break.

‘The lads did ever so well. We started OK and Wycombe scored their goal out of nothing. We came back into the game very well and were unlucky to only be drawing 1-1 at half-time,’ he said.

He was expecting an improved performance from the home side in the second half but felt that his players dealt well with the best Wycombe had to offer.

‘Wycombe came out stronger in the second half, which we knew they would, but we withstood everything they threw at us and I’m delighted.’ said Hendon.

I struggled to find some Barnet fans’ views but here are a few:

The following extracts are from Barnet’s ‘Official message board’ and ‘The Football Forum.’

‘Another good performance by the Bees, particularly the first half. Cole made some excellent saves in the 2nd half. Their keeper was dreadful, three times he went completely missing and we failed to convert the opportunity. It was a shame we were not given space to get more crosses in as I am sure he would have fumbled.’

‘We dominated the first half without creating any real chances and I was very pleased how well we played. Second half the lads looked knackered. Wycombe were terrible, played like the away side.’

‘Following the most blatant control with his hand for the goal and getting away with two others (one in the box) before finally being penalised near the end for handball, I was wondering if Paul Furlong was considering taking up basketball as a new career? Surely I was not the only one who was just waiting for the referee’s whistle when the goal went in?!!!’

‘Dodgiest keeper of the season award – Young (Wycombe) Most blatant handballed goal of the season award – Furlong (Barnet). Thought we deserved the draw, Wycombe were pretty bad though. First half we totally dominated in terms of possession and had quite a few chances but mostly half chances. Second half we weren’t as good and resorted to hoofing it up more with hardly any width. Cole made some good saves to keep us in it when we were holding on near the end. Well done Bees.’

The only positive points the Bees made about Wycombe related to our stadium.

‘I was impressed with Adams Park. It’s changed a lot since that 3-1 Conference game which was my last visit:
* An out of town industrial estate with room to expand if required.
* Good volume of sound when fans singing/goals scored.
* Hospitality boxes.
* London Wasps probably funding the lot.
* Catering that was fast, efficient, hot and actually tasted of what it said on the menu.
I love Underhill to bits but it just goes to show what the next step up will require, without being over ambitious with stadium size.’

bournemouthbee replied:
‘Great post. All we need to be able to do is self-fund with alternative revenue streams other than the need for a Rugby team to ruin the pitch.’
