Wycombe: The Opposition View

Following Last night’s abandoned match between Wycombe and Macclesfield Town, here are some thoughts from the opposition manager and a few of their fans.



Macclesfield manager Keith Alexander told his club’s official website: ‘No-one likes to call games off especially when you have travelled over 150 miles to get here. It could have easily been called off prior to kick off, but both Peter Taylor and myself were happy to at least get the game started in the hope that the weather would relent. But it didn’t and in the end the ref had no other alternative but to call it off.’

Alexander also told the Manchester Evening News: ‘Although Wycombe are unbeaten they have to lose sometime and we intended it to be tonight.’



The travelling Macclesfield fans came a long way for only 22 minutes football, but they were in good spirits after an impromptu snowball fight with their players following the game.

Things got even better for the travelling fans, when they were subsequently treated to a few drinks in the bar by their club directors and a few of their players.

‘Arriving at Adams park later than expected due to unforeseen traffic, we still made it time for kickoff. Macc’s goal was visible. But there was only the noise of the Wycombe fans, as none could be seen through the snow. Apart from that the pitch was visible but the ball was being affected and was not rolling. Macc should count themselves lucky they had the game cancelled as they struggled to make an impact. In the end we were invited into the sports bar by Andy Scott who kindly set up a tab joined by Keith and a few Players.’

‘ Nightmare journey down – heavy traffic, snow and heavy rain, but fair play to the club – the directors bought free drinks for the away fans that went to the bar afterwards, about 80 Macc fans there I’d say, and 8 or 9 of the players came into the bar for 20 mins or so which was good to see.’

But, perhaps more than that, Board members, players and manager all making the effort to mingle with the fans in the supporters’ bar before we got on our sledges to head off back north. They didn’t have to do it – their journey had been as fruitless as ours – but they did. Thanks & appreciated.’

‘I thought that was a nice touch from the club. Keith Alexander came over to me & shook my hand & thanked me for going. Its things like this that make me proud to be a Macc fan. Not sure many other clubs would do that.’
